What does a Non Executive Director actually do everyday?

What does a Non Executive Director actually do everyday? An Overview from an NED. Very often I am asked what a Non Executive Director (NED) actually does. This is sometimes combined with the assumption that it is a boring job – because you sit in endless meetings with no real impact. Some may even think an NED equals a NERD – which is not really case, unless the person was already nerdy before.

The Start of a Small Podcast Series

The Start of a Small Podcast Series I like the ‘podcast’ format, because listeners can get a really good impression of a person and their ideas from it. And at the same time, if you have a conversation, you get immediate feedback from the person across from you. When I write, I never know if the words truly reflect my ideas and are understood the way I meant them.

Last week, I did my first podcast session with Norman Glaser’s MARKENREBELL. We talked about business topics such as performance, digitisation, technology and the areas where our corporate culture needs to change. I also talked about how these topics have shaped me as a professional – and what I am working on at the […]

Why cyber security should be at the top of company boards’ agendas

Why cyber security should be at the top of company boards’ agendas Last weekend, I attended a great workshop in London where board members as well as Chief Information officers (CIOs) and Chief Information Security Officers (CISOs) from various industries (banking, pharma, technology, production and communication) met with CEOs of fast growing software companies to discuss innovative solutions in the areas Cyber Security, Cloud services, robots and artificial intelligence. I had the opportunity to exchange ideas and discuss the distinct challenges we as board members are facing in managing digital and cyber security risk in the boardroom.

The Challenges of Enterprise Evaluation

The Challenges of Enterprise Evaluation On the 20th of June, I was invited to give a dinner speech at the 16th “Jahresforum Unternehmensbewertung” (company evaluation) organized by Handelsblatt and the Institute of Auditors in Frankfurt.

As a member of a supervisory board, and even more as an acting CFO, I regularly have been and currently am involved in merger and acquisition projects – whether a company is considering buying other companies, selling parts of its own company, or merging with others. In all these cases, you have to evaluate […]

Do we need different leadership styles to tackle the current global developments?

Do we need different leadership styles to tackle the current global developments? In the last few years, I have seen several unexpected global developments that require us as individuals, in politics and as leaders in companies, to come up with creative ideas faster. Here are four examples:

In my blogpost about power structures, I mentioned my strong belief in the need for diversity in management and politics. And I received some feedback from readers who are concerned that if we emphasise the need for women in leadership, we will actually separate men and women instead of bringing them together. But I […]

Rethinking healthcare – panel discussion at the NOAH conference in Berlin

Rethinking healthcare – panel discussion at the NOAH conference in Berlin For me, the healthcare industry is a prime example for one of the industries where digital solutions have a lot of potential. At this year’s NOAH conference in Berlin, I talked with Saskia Steinacker (Global Head Digital Excellence at Bayer) and Julie Teigland (EY Regional Managing Partner for Germany, Switzerland and Austria) about how new technologies and working with new partners can change healthcare – even to the point where, instead of treating illnesses, we might be able to prevent them.

Buzzwords like blockchain or artificial intelligence applications have since become omnipresent. But can these new technologies really change the ways in which many industries work and approach problems? For me, the healthcare industry is a prime example for one of the industries where digital solutions have a lot of potential. At this year’s NOAH […]

How do I keep a digital mindset as a non-digital native?

How do I keep a digital mindset as a non-digital native? To do my job, I have to be able to identify the technologies and trends that may have an influence on the sector of the companies I work for. Some technologies matter to a different degree in logistics than they do in automotive or service. I need to be a challenger and a consultant to the operating directors – so I have to keep a close eye on developments.

I was born in 1960. In my youth, telephones still had a cord. I wrote my master’s thesis on a typewriter. As these examples clearly show, I’m a dinosaur and a non-digital native. But I know that it is always important to stay tuned to the newest developments. How can I possibly do a […]

Women and Power

Simone Menne

Do we need different power structures to allow women to participate? At the end of her brilliant book Women & Power, historian Mary Beard claims that we must change the structures of power to allow women to participate. Power, she argues, is historically bound to prestige. It is elitist and reserved for a select […]

My Kiel

My Kiel I recently moved back to my hometown, Kiel , in Northern Germany, right on the Baltic Sea. Most people, at least in Germany, have a certain disbelief in their voice when they hear about my move: “Really???? KIIEL ??!!”

I recently moved back to my hometown, Kiel [keel], in Northern Germany, right on the Baltic Sea. Most people, at least in Germany, have a certain disbelief in their voice when they hear about my move: “Really???? KIIEL [keeeeeeel]??!!” Well, it’s true that Kiel is a bit remote. But if you like to be […]
